Vance: Fatal Crane Collapse Was the Result of Greed

Good to hear that the District Attorney is going after this guy - corporate greed that causes material harm needs to be punished.

The indictment of James F. Lomma, the owner of New York Crane and Equipment Corporation, which was made public on Monday, stemmed from the fatal collapse of one of his cranes on East 91st Street in May 2008.

Prosecutors said that Mr. Lomma and one of his employees, Tibor Varganyi, had replaced the crane's broken turntable with an inferior one made by a Chinese company.

It was a crack in the turntable that caused the crane to plummet about 200 feet and kill the operator, Donald C. Leo, and another construction worker, Ramadan Kurtaj, prosecutors said.

The company took shortcuts to get the crane back in operation quickly and save money, said Cyrus R. Vance Jr., the Manhattan district attorney.

I remember when this crane collapsed - it hit the construction site of a new middle school, I think. Imagine if that school had been full of kids. Lock this guy up.
